About this site

Hello.

My name is Renae. I eat food. I’ve been vegan for about ten years, and was vegetarian for ten years before that, so animal products ceased being food for me a very long time ago. “I Eat Food” comes from the Invader Zim cartoon: Zim has a poster in his kitchen stating “I EAT FOOD” in an attempt to convince visitors he’s a human, just like them. Zim’s actually an alien and doesn’t eat food, so his poster is a lie. I find it amusing because I am easily amused. But the other reason I named my blog I Eat Food is because I feel like some people think vegans subsist on weird vegan substances that meat-eaters wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot fork, when the fact of the matter is we eat food, real food.

I love to cook and entertain, but I’m not the type to preach or try to convert, so you won’t be talked down to here if you aren’t vegan or even vegetarian. What I prefer to do is make delicious, healthy food that speaks for itself. I also want to make the preparation of vegan meals look fun and easy. I hope to attract all sorts of eaters and cooks to this site for those reasons, which is why I didn’t put “vegan” in the URL, despite the fact that veganism is very important to me. You don’t need to sign some vegan credo to make my recipes, but why not try cooking vegan once a week? Of course, if you are vegan, I’m delighted to have you here as well and I’d love to share tips and recipes with you.

I was a bit hesitant to start a food blog, despite my husband’s repeated urging, because a lot of the cooking I do is very imprecise. I tend to just throw stuff together until it tastes good. Therefore it’s imperative you view any measurements I state as a starting point and experiment from there, because even if I said “1/2 tsp” of something, you can be sure I didn’t actually measure 1/2 a teaspoon (with the exception of baked goods, which do require precise measurements).
